Sustainable water policy
Austria is committed to a sustainable water management policy, i.e. a policy in which sustainable management of our precious resource water is a central concern. In order to ensure that Austria will retain its pole position also in the future, we must face several different challenges.
In addition to the necessary legal change paving the way for the future provided by the amendment to the Water Act, adopted by Parliament in July 2003, other key challenges in the coming years will include increasing the population’s appreciation of water and highlighting the significance of this essential and vital resource. In the Year of Water 2003, thanks to the many opportunities for participation and the rich information and action programme provided, an excellent basis was created for getting citizens involved and for making them take part in the decision-making process.
